Under the roomy château, there are two large basements .. one is used for general storage and a wine cellar and the other has been converted into a recording studio. I call it VM Studios.

The studio is generally used for Vanessa’s work projects, she runs a successful media production company that covers France, Germany, Italy and Spain, with an agency office and HQ in Paris. Mostly advertising work, songs and jingles for adverts, voice over work, etc .. but she has also rented out the studio for the recording of radio plays and for musicians. Vanessa scouts and hires talent, both known and unknown to star in television and radio adverts and also connects producers and directors with crew and facilities.

Yukiko is a French-Japanese cellist who I met in Berlin many years ago and who I kept in touch with over the years. She studied at the Universität der Künste, Berlin and went on to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris .. I know a dancer who studied there too but she isn’t part of this story. Yukiko considers herself to be an avant-guard performer but I asked her if she would be willing to create a piece for me, under my direction and she agreed.

Now, the three of us are together again for the second studio session, Vanessa at the technical helm, me trying to translate my emotions into a sense of the music and the Video Art project I have in mind and Yukiko throwing herself magnificently into the challenge.

I could do this forever .. I love music and being with musicians as they create and I love the technology of a studio and being around a competent sound engineer like Vanessa. I am a total studio slut.

Once the ideas are in place there is little for me to do but watch these artists at work, bringing together and creating the Art which I started .. and drink wine or make coffee and submerge myself in the moments as Yukiko and Vanessa work out the fine details of the acoustics and listen to them layer one performance on top of another until there is this ocean of audio-beauty.

It’s going great so far, I think the first session we had together last year enabled Yukiko to translate what I was trying to tell her, so this time it’s a lot easier for her to simply slip into mode and play. Vanessa could make a fart in a can sound gorgeous, she is a master.

A few more days and this will end and back to Earth I come .. but, until then .. plus de vin, vous bâtards!
