  Thoughts about editing
« on: October 19, 2005, 05:29:53 AM » by Andrew Nightingale
Since it is likely that gradually more editors will become active on the board, I think it would be good if it was clearer which editors were picking what. I know it is possible to see the "moved" note in the "submissions" section - but what about a separate "Editor's picks" section for each editor? Although having a range of editors contributing to one "Editor's picks" provides some eclecticism, eventually might it not be too much? Separate "Editor's picks" sections could allow each section to develop a quite distinctive character.

Additionally I am wondering how the "submissions" and "editor's picks" sections will look after some time: it might be a bit of a morass of work from which it is hard to disinter new work. Would it be worth subdividing an "editor's picks" section into time-framed topics, so that each became more like an "issue"? That way, the ediorial process would be taking a broader view of submissions over a period of time perhaps. The risk is that too much makes its way into "editor's picks".

Any thoughts?

Those are interesting ideas. Here's what I was thinking.

In addition to the editors' picks board, another ueberboard needs to be created, for a three-step process. First submissions, then picks, then ... what? A featured gallery? And who would select the pieces that get into the featured gallery?

I think what we're both getting at is a need to separate out even further.

On the other hand, the democratic approach taken here has its merits.

Nice suggestion, Andrew. I'll ask the editors to comment.

In the meantime, I've added a new Featured Poems board, which will be used to place poems to be featured on our main page. These poems will have first made it onto the Editors' Picks board from the Submissions board, so we now have a three-stage process of selection.

Individual editors may choose poems from the Submissions board to go in the Picks board, but ideally we should have a discussion--and it can be a community discussion, not just among editors--as to which poems are selected for the Featured Poems board and thus to be seen on the main page.

Anyone is free to start such a discussion.

Not wishing to start up trouble again, but I find the above quote from Jay very interesting. Did anything ever become of this idea?

(the bold was in the original post, btw)

This was posted in the very earliest days, and, presumably, not considered practical.

Please leave me out of your response, Brian, as I am suspending all my duties as an editor, whilst I consider whether or no to make that permanent, in order to concentrate on the business of trying to write poetry. So there is no point in addressing any reply to me personally, as in my position as a member, I'm not interested and won't respond.

Cheers
