Simpatico

Lavonne Westbrooks
she modeled
for the only nude
I ever painted
amid lamplight flickers
in a humid garden
we drained
glass after glass
of berry wine
liquid alizarin
sparkles in my memory
what's left is
a warm recollection
voices and tinkling glassware
damp skin and canvas

I love this, Lavonne. Your choice of line breaks is so complimentary in this piece, it is a joy to read, over and over. I also really like how you have one thought/image flowing into the next. It works both with/without discerning between images.

This is very well done. Note the balance between sound and the glimmer of 'what the language points to'. The omission of punctuation actually lends to the sense of memory "picking the highlights" out of the whole. It is not often we get to witness a device used to accentuate a poem rather than seem trendy or worse, lazy.
Nice work, a definite pick.

Now that IS art, Lavonne. It's taken it's rightful place - up front.
