the road to Milner Place

at Hartshead Moor services
on top of the Pennines
halfway between
Manchester and Leeds
Lancaster and York
on the radio, by chance
the War of the Roses
I sit and listen
with the car window open
the roar I can hear
is not from the motorway
but the charges of Bosworth and Stoke
blown up the valley
by the wind that bends
hunching firs to the hillside
buffets the fleeces
of implacable sheep
helps loft
a black murder of crows
after their bombastic strut
round the tussock grass
and marsh reeds
up here
high above
day to day time
six hundred years
is just the next junction

My name is quite a common address. Much liking this, Roger.

nice sound.
I'll say. Lovely chains of sound that begin in the opening lines "services/roses/listen" - "Pennines/between/Leeds" - "Moor/York/War/car" - "radio/roses/open" - and tumble on down through the poem.

dear Roger
it is fine to know the journey to Milner's reading on the 25th was
so all encompassing.
now it would be nice if you posted also a reading of your poem

The destination might be common, but your talent is rare.
Glad you liked,

Work ruins my ability to keep up to date with this place.
This poem is particularly great, such a timeless feel that cruises along so seamlessly. I was there, in that car. Beautifully done.

To succeed or not is irrelevant. There is no such thing. Making your unknown known is what is important.
