when you are old and grey…
« on: December 04, 2010, 01:31:27 PM » by milner place

well
i fucking am

a wind
is brewing
somewhere that’ll blow
this leaf

to fall
         to putrify
in mulch

or burn
amongst
the other sweepings
in the flame
of all unknowings

meanwhile
a robin
grubs in snow

a pint
a fag
her smile
some stilton cheese
with apple pie

Poignant. The last S is perfect, smoldering like the pile of leaves.

The first/second line punch is great.  Unexpected and "real."

Splendid ending, Milner, and the rhyme from several stanzas previous, intact - a sign of miraculous metrics. Tom

Thanks Lavonne, Rob, Tom, Tiko. Hope Yeats isn't turning in his grave. It's about the time of night for me to be 'full of sleep'. So

cheers

You take "full of sleep" to a whole new level .....lol

That is one of my all time favorite of the oldies (the poem I mean - hehe)

and to you, Quentin, for such appreciation.

dear Milner

i found a very nice discussion in the second line

should the  ( i ) be quiet/gentle
or more emphatic and thus with an upper case I

i also like very much your play of putrify ( spelled with an i )
with its relationship to stilton

the overall taste of the poem is great
yet for me i'll take the pie
and leave the cheese

Thanks, SL. One problem with using 'I' is that it might look like a typo, rather than being deliberate - bold instead?

I rarely write with 'intent', Scott, though that may enter when the first writing of a poem is done, or during the process. But then whatever comes over might better be described as a 'slant' (or 'slants') rather than 'intent'. There are and will be exceptions, especially when a sense of ire has been stimulated and is the driving force. Glad you like it.

Cheers

dear Milner it is the subtlety of the  esthetics that is a challenge.
for my eye the bold lower case i works if the title is also bold face.
you did not offer the title with each beginning letter upper case
so i make a layout for you to ponder here in that format.

Thanks, SL. My problem is that I don't stress that 'i' when reading it, and therefore bold or capital might be confusing. I'll muse, and ponder, then muse again ... tra la la ... sweet lovers love the spring

Love the way your opening two lines kick the title squarely up the arse!

Beautifully balanced and paced throughout. A pleasure to read.

Now I must also thanks all you guys, Oskar, Rob, Tom, Michelle, Ken.

It amuses me to recall, some 20 years ago, having an argument with an editor who would insist on printing 'fucking' as 'f.....g' in his mag. I asked him if he thought even an 8 year old wouldn't fill in the blanks, so what was the point. A refusal to print poems that include 'bad language' is fine by me - an editor's choice - but that ...... compromise, to me, has always been absurd.

Anyways, cheers

dear Milner

a nice touch to have the poem in gray/grey !

i might go a bit further and have a greyish blule font printed on a warm ivory colored background
to accentuate the stilton

a fun graphics project to play with
it could have the makings of a nice poster

thanks for once again sharing your outlaw hideout

Looked to see if Yeats was "gray" or "grey" and surprised to see reliable sites quoting both.

Best line to quote in support of "grey:"

In the dark of my room I imagined that I saw again the heavy grey face of the paralytic.

I suspect that Yeats would have used 'grey'. My reasoning is that in my school days, in the 1930s/40s, 'grey' was the taught spelling in this country (UK), and hence probably in Eire also.

SL, you would be a great asset to their editorial staff at Outlaw Poetry.

Thanks all you guys
