  stalagmite's dilemma
« on: September 12, 2010, 10:30:54 AM » by Tom Riordan
as my Lord God
 in His own time
  draws nearer
  incrementally
 strengthening
 building me up
 fashioning me
  in His image
  it baffles me
    imagining
       how
         I

                  .

                  .

                  .

         I
       will
    receive
 Him on that
 glorious day
 when His tip
touches mine
how to thank
 and worship
 a Being both
 superior and
identical to me

Tom,
I love this one to death - excuse the pun ;)

I do alot of typography at my day job and would love to make an image out of this one, just for fun, of course.

Do let me know if you're interested.
Otherwise,
Big thanks,
Ginny

James, I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and Ginny, of course, I'm delighted if you make an image, and curious.
Wanted to have this hanging from the top of the box and seated on the bottom, but when I did that, the stupid photo knocked the top lines out of alignment. -Tom

Concretes are tough for me, as the form sometimes seems forced.  Here, this is not the case.  It brings so many layers - reflection, famous artwork (Sistene Chapel Creation Panel), torture device (iron maiden spikes), ellipsis... great execution.  RLR

dear Tom

i look forward to seeing what Ginny will do with this as far as font and form
as i would like to see the Stalagmite more clearly.

right now it appears as two condoms with a trickle in between.

i'll be back for more enjoyment.

Tom,

the beauty is the language and, for me,
the visuals of two bullets rushing towards
each other.

a violence of affection
or religion
depending on the reader.

well done!

Reminds me of "Easter Wings" by George Herbbert.  Belongs in Submit, or do you think otherwise?

you should put some returns in the poem because
your picture is distorting the shape.

still enjoying it.

Thank you, Tiko! The whole thing's destabilized again on this screen, so the dots are missing their target, but I'm going to assume it's okay on your screen and leave it alone! Tom

I had this happen once and found that if I brought the first line of the poem below the level of the picture it solved the problem.

thank you, Sue.
it might, but I thought I had it solved by just bringing it all over from the center to the left margin. apparently not. but I want it to stalactite to hang from the ceiling, not midair! whatever. Tom

Just had to have this on the front page...the form follows the subject so well, without distorting the balance of the poem...superb.

dear Tom

not only is this up and down but far and wide as well

it should not only be on the 'front page' but also on the back cover

Sue, thank you so much!
Lavonne, Silent, Tiko -- and Geoff and Milner, whose good wishes I somehow missed earlier -- thank you all for looking in and the encouraging words. Tom

p.s. sorry if it's out of alignment on your screen. each of my computers shows it differently....but it's the thought that counts, right?

Very well done.  I like this poem.
It is fashionable nowadays to be anti-religious but I hope that all all approaches to the sacred will become kinder and better.

Thanks for looking in RLR. Listening to everyone's comments, I've enlarged the field of my own interpretations, thinking What if God really was like a stalactite, and grew Himself only as he created? Tom
