Are you commenting?

We want to encourage the members to comment more on the poems posted in submit and the workshop. Lots of good work moves off the front page before any comments are posted because we get so many new poems. As one of our other editors said in a conversation this evening: "this is a community based on exchanges, dialog."
Comments are important to a poet on many levels. They provide encouragement as well as guidance; comments provide the poet with views he or she may never have imagined. A poet wants to know if their message is understood, or if there is something left out. Members should never feel they have nothing to offer a poet. If you have nothing to critique, say so! If you adore the poem or if you don't, say that, also.
Just remember to be respectful.
I know most new members review the poems on the front page but another way you can review new work is to utilize the
Site Tools
menu on the right side of the screen. Choose "
Show unread posts since last visit
" and you'll see a list of new work.

I often think one has to decompose
before any one has the balls to comment
or understand the concept of indifference
v de facto community of stars and celebs
I ceased to comment, I felt like a prat often
feedback is good, traffic works both ways
me and you, cosy — why, I even get to wonder
about the meaning of tuff-love in winter
an excuse, maybe. I admit a mere thank you
by way of thanks to authors for sharing their time
work, views, call it for what it is. I think
should you come here, then, if you read&write
you should spend same/= time to comment
on your way out.
There should be a method
to measure comment-free reader-only hits.
sad to say, here, you could beat your jaws
all day long about this and still end up with the
same stellar crew keeping the thing on the track
feedback is a cost to someone, a sacrifice
I care, of course. But I also understand constraint
often objectives conflict, sum stuff, togetherness
works when each part adds something
a strange jot is a picture, which makes poetic
sense of this madness called community, I guess
ring-a-ring of roses
Lavonne, I hear you anyway.
Thank you.

"this is a community based on exchanges, dialog." This is worth repeating.
I can only speak for myself, but as one of pc's floating editors, I find myself less likely to revisit the work of poets who do not actively participate in the community. I am far more apt to read and comment upon work posted by writers who have taken the time to do the same for others.

I haven't been commenting because I can't be bothered, to be quite honest. The same professionals who recommended this place once upon a time - and unfortunately they aren't Danish - are telling me to steer clear. It's turned into a place 'for pimping poet stalkers and sagacious prostitutes', not my words. How do you as editors feel about getting reviews like that from people in the publishing business?

Yes. I don't read poetry.

Hi Doris,
Few questions arise for me.... do you only follow 'professional' advice and what is a 'sagacious prostitute'? Thanks, Marg

A nice opening for a poem, among other things.
Sagacious, the veteran prostitute...

Possibly proving that professionals and critics and assorted members of assorted societies are full of shit.
I will throw out a well deserved "fuck 'em" to those who preach too much and too loudly.

Thank you Doris, for your quick response. Congratulations on your fine work and your accolades. Perhaps you can choose a softer brush when you paint an opinion of this website. Is there really a need for such a harsh strike through for the entire sharings here?
Respectfully, Marg

sagacious - having or showing acute mental discernment and keen practical sense; shrewd.
i'll take that. prostitute sounds
personal, like some feelings
were hurt.
my thoughts, you have to give
what you want. it's all about
people helping people.
no personal attacks are allowed.
so, i'm not sure where the problem lies,
except someone didn't expect
the roses to have thorns.

Yup, too often on critique sites people do not have the tough skin to receive critiques and so they get offended if there work is not quite up to PC's standards and get negative critiques or ignored all together. The other side is new writer who takes ALL crits to heart and have not learned to pick and chose which crits are the right ones for their poem and trust everyone must be right because they do not have enough experience to make that distinction on their own quite yet. In either case, this site has some of the best poets on it that I read. I always enjoy it here both hearing the feedback on my work and reading the work of others posted. This site (and no site for that matter) will work for everyone, some people will be turned away while others embrace it. Just the way it goes -

it does not as i'm a professed
novice. nor am i bothered by the
'professional's' view of the site. i
only question if you feel it's
accurate and has merit. how has
your experience with the site
lined up with the opinoins of the
professionals.
thanks,

Doris, you are not making much sense to me at the moment. Generic statements like "people in the publishing business" sounds laughable to me and makes it hard for me to take you seriously. In your one thread you talked about having problems with facebook where your account at facebook was hacked what does this have anything to do with PC? - I hope you understand that facebook and PC are two different sites ? Again, you are not making much sense to me. In either case, if you have concerns with being here, why return? I don't think it offends anyone if you do not want to come back to the site, many people come give it a try and if it isn't a good fit, they move on. If the site clicks, they stay. Not sure why you don't just do the same?

I've worked in the art world since I was 12, more than one of my musings are the kind that the broadsheets are still more than happy to cover. Which is why my project has been followed by various people since before it was worth following. But I'm thinking they're probably right if that is as constructive an answer as I can get.
Don't know what a sagacious prostitute is, Marg. Someone who takes this place seriously?

dear Doris
as you know i am not an editor here.
& i truly appreciate your raising these topics
for all inclusive discussion is good for the collective universal consciousness.
it is a blessing to be able to give voice
without being censored
i have been in the art world around the world myself since i was 17 and i am now 58
and i have participated in many other walks of life as well.
the art world is no different than the rest of the world
all the flaws ,near perfections and everything in between exist
just about equally everywhere
in my experience
and the term Professional regardless of where it is used in life
in no way represents to me a guarantee of redeeming quality, integrity
or sage like understanding.
i have observed that amateurs are more often than not, free to be their own authentic selves
with out having to cave in to the concessions of the neediness of remuneration
a warm smile
