Sometimes, on rare occasions, it will spill out on the page, in near final form, driven by both Muse and Metric.  There are, however, a myriad fragments, images, words, scribblings in my notebook, on napkins, on the dust on car trunks.  They must dance in my head, subconsciously rearranging themselves in there, "metricizing," reordering.  The final draft must stand up to reading aloud for me.  That is the only way I can spot uncomfortable variances in the structure.  I also read some while accompanied by dark ambient music, the lull assisting me in structure and sound.  The only public readings I have done are Eulogies and other less "boiled" down poetry designed for an event.  Part of the fun I have with my regular poetry is hearing another's interpretation of breaks, metrics, mood.

Silent Lotus,

reading aloud is not part of my process.  i am averted to the sound of my
own voice reading my own poetry.  if i NEED to hear it read aloud to get
a feeling of how it reads, i'll ask my wife to read it aloud.  and, as for
reading them publicly, i can almost certainly say, it will never happen.
i posted a recording to one of my poems, which was the result of pressure
from my wife.  i believe that'll be the extent of my public reading. :)

an interesting thought, though, as i've never considered reading aloud as
part of the writing process.

thanks for the question, and thanks to James and R. Raymond for their responses
as well.
