  Letter Home From College, 1954
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:10:25 PM » by Jonathan Bracker
You thought the sky was blue this afternoon?

This at dusk is the better hue,
Heavy and everywhere.  Against it
Trees are black, homes black,
Lit windows yellow squares.
The neighbors call in their children
As night lets out the stars.

Sit on the steps, enjoy your cigarette.
I am going for a walk,
I want to see what street lights do to leaves.

I remember looking at streetlit leaves on campus in 1969 on one of my walks.  This poem brought back a whole frame of mind.

Yes, and in those days people did not know how cigarette smoking was a danger.  Nice memories, I gather.

lol & almost every dorm room was grey with smoke, as were the profs' offices -- grey-suited men with pipes, sitting inside grey clouds of cherry-flavored Borkum Riff.

Jonathan, this is lovely.  I  have also let my friend sit and watch the evening.  I seem to have to  walk.

I'm been enjoying the calm gentleness of this one - thought I'd share....love the image of the children going in / stars coming out like they are passing each other on their way - Michelle

Silent, I was pleased by your remark and photo. When I was very young I read haiku in translation and was moved by it, and now am interested in Buddhism.  I always have been drawn to "little things" rather than big.
