DescriptionTurkish Cultural Society at Brown University presents a poetry evening in honor of the great Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet (1901-1963).
Join us for a celebration of the life and of work of Nazim Hikmet, the first and foremost modern Turkish poet.
Recognized around the world as one of the great international poets of the twentieth century, Hikmet revolutionized Turkish poetry, abandoning Ottoman literary conventions and introducing free verse and colloquial diction.
American poet Edward Hirsch, who is the author of How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry, describes Hikmet's poetry as strikingly direct and ruthlessly honest. He wrote that "To read Hikmet deeply is to be stirred up and confronted by unabashed emotion, connected to something mortally, even nakedly human". Nazim Hikmet's poetry has been translated into more than fifty languages.
The poetry evening will include Brown faculty and students reading a selection from his poetry in Turkish, Arabic, English, French, Greek, Persian, Russian and Spanish.
There will also be live music performance.
