A poet dares be just so clear and no clearer.... He unzips the veil from beauty, but does not remove it.  A poet utterly clear is a trifle glaring.  ~E.B. White

i love watching soccer players, duh.

and whatever that excites me as an avid
spectator.

well, if you love soccer more than Christmas, you are not a child anymore.
you love it more than candy, you are not a child anymore.
more than candy canes, (redundant) you are definitely not a child anymore (redundant).
more than a dachshund, or a labrador, or a german shepherd, you are more than a child,
more than a man,

and i will always love you for that.

sometimes it is nicer to see a man without his dog around him.
he 's more sexy, dogless.

My thoughts exactly, Emma! This is one of the things I love about this interactive format, you get to actually read along as your reader takes your poem on a jaunt. Tom

Soccer? Really? Isn't that a rather Un-American activity?

Not any more of course. I'm sure this boy of yours will love seeing the USA beat England in the opening stages of the World Cup. It could happen!

Cheers

Thanks for the generous thought, David, but my young Stevie is a rabid Liverpool fan and will likely root for his buddies on England.
Had a fine night himself last night, including a corner kick that curved straight in.
Things are different here now. All little kids play soccer (not dawn to dusk like the rest of the world, but for their hour on Saturday!)
My first game as specta-parent, I grudingly sat off by myself with the newspaper, thinking myself utterly uninterested, and then when I glimpsed up and saw him go charging somewhere, it was a good thing I was off by myself because I burst into tears!
I'll probably root US though, having been inspired by US women in Oympics, which game I started watching as a fan of Brazil but was won over by the stolid grit of the Yank women. Tom

Stevie is a good name for a Liverpool fan, Tom. (Although now is not a good time to be a Liverpool fan.)

I live a long way away from top-flight football (forgive me, but that's what I call it, it's ingrained), but the first game I saw was at Liverpool in 1970, I think. Very old-fashioned, very tribal. They won 2-0 against Wolves.

Brazil is a good call for the World Cup this summer. It always is.

Cheers

Well, David, I'd say we'll be rooting for England first, then U.S., then Brazil -- wait, no, any team with a Liverpool player on it too. Anyway, moving this out of Workshop to Submit now. Good or bad, what's to edit? Tom

Proud declaration.  I wonder if the boy has ever had a dog.

Rick, the boy has several cousin dogs and would kill for a dog of his own--as he would for candycanes etc. I think he was as much surprised by the truth of his declaration as you and I were. Tom
