  Well publicized secret to success
« on: October 22, 2009, 04:08:50 PM » by Stewart Grant
Most writers
eventually
write about cats

They are noble beasts
and if you want
to be a writer
you should adopt one
at some point

Found on another website, termed the two greatest cat poems in English:

Ode On the Death of a Favorite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes
by Thomas Gray

'Twas on a lofty vase's side,
Where China's gayest art had dyed
The azure flowers that blow;
Demurest of the tabby kind,
The pensive Selima, reclined,
Gazed on the lake below.

Her conscious tail her joy declared;
The fair round face, the snowy beard,
The velvet of her paws,
Her coat, that with the tortoise vies,
Her ears of jet, and emerald eyes,
She saw; and purred applause.

Still had she gazed; but 'midst the tide
Two angel forms were seen to glide,
The genii of the stream:
Their scaly armour's Tyrian hue
Through richest purple to the view
Betrayed a golden gleam.

The hapless nymph with wonder saw:
A whisker first, and then a claw,
With many an ardent wish,
She stretched in vain to reach the prize.
What female heart can gold despise?
What cat's averse to fish?

Presumptuous maid! with looks intent
Again she stretched, again she bent,
Nor knew the gulf between.
(Malignant Fate sat by and smiled)
The slippery verge her feet beguiled,
She tumbled headlong in.

Eight times emerging from the flood
She mewed to ev'ry wat'ry god,
Some speedy aid to send.
No dolphin came, no Nereid stirred:
Nor cruel Tom nor Susan heard.
A fav'rite has no friend!

From hence, ye beauties undeceived,
Know, one false step is ne'er retrieved,
And be with caution bold.
Not all that tempts your wand'ring eyes
And heedless hearts is lawful prize;
Nor all that glisters gold.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Petition
by Henri Coulette:

Lord of the Tenth Life,
Welcome my Jerome,
A fierce, gold tabby.
Make him feel at home.

He loves bird and mouse.
He loves a man's lap,
And in winter's light,
Paws, tucked in, a nap.

Tom--Well mine pales in comparison! This was just a fun little piece I wrote a few months ago after reading a poem by Bukowski about cats. It got me thinking about how many other writers I enjoyed had at some point written about the beasts and this just jumped into my head.

This is one of dozens, if not hundreds, of poems I've missed reading until now.  [thank you, tom, for the link].  Thank you, stewart, for the poem!

Stewart!  Awesome job!  Wonderful to see this here.  Maybe there's a secret to 'fun little pieces' that 'jump into your head'.

Congratulations!

Have come back to this a few times and I think the 1S can stand alone.
Write the word 'cat' and images assail you. And while writers write from experience,
that experience doesn't necessarily mean they own a cat.

The 2S shuts out the reader's imagination.
I think the poem is more provocative without it.

Stewart! I was a skeptic but realize I just joined your dictum in S7 "Flamingo"!

With cats, it's an appearance
of doing their own thing,
then the epicurean selection
of your lap.

Nice one, Stewart. I wouldn't lose S2 if I were you.

That's Horace Walpole's cat, I think.

There's a wonderful laconic tongue-in-cheekness here.  A very re-readable terseness.  I can't put my finger on why I like this so much
