a MUST READ article on the poems of Milner Place
« on: September 01, 2009, 08:26:57 AM » by John Yamrus
Here's a link to a fantastic article on the poems of Milner Place.  The author,Todd Moore, is always on the money with his assessments...never more so than in this article.  If you're having trouble putting your finger on why Milner's poems are so special, this article may very well help you make up your mind.  Check it out:

anything i can do to help promote Milner's work, i do gladly.  Also, Todd Moore is no slouch himself, to be sure...and you couldn't go wrong picking up his latest book as well...
THE RIDDLE OF THE WOODEN GUN.
showing financial support for the writers we admire is a MUST.
take care.

Still stunned and dazed by this essay, most especially as it comes from a poet and writer for whom I have such great respect.

As Todd makes particular reference to the poem The Man Who Had forgotten the Names of Trees, I thought it might make it easy for any to find it here:

milner;
i hadn't noticed yr comments.  you're quite welcome.  i always make it a point, any time i'm talking on things literary, to drop your name into the conversation.  you and locklin and i'm starting to keep an eye on a new guy named Rob Plath.  he's been around for a while, apparently, but you know how huge this whole poetry scene is and how easy it is to NOT get noticed.  anyway, he recently published a 300 page book of his poetry called A BELLYFUL OF ANARCHY (Epic Rites Press  epicrites.org) that just blew me away.
someone to keep an eye on.
anyway, congratulations once again on Todd Moore's fine article.  he really has a way of getting to the heart of things and his assessment of your poetry is right on the money.
best...
always...

Thanks, John, especially for bringing Rob Plath to my attention. Been reading some found on the web, and very impressed. Will dig deeper.

yes, not to hijack your thread, milner, but to give you an example of Rob Plath's work (and you'll immediately understand why i like the guy), here's a short one of his that's easy and quick for me to transcribe:

great poems are like 911 calls

great
poems
are
like
911
calls

screaming
&
pared
down
&
urgent

pretension
beaten
out of
them
by
crushing
circumstances

not
a literary
game
but
the
real
motherfucking
deal

would
you
use
rhyme
& meter
when
you
dialed
911
for
help?

then
why
do
it
in
poetry?

you
don't
have
as
much
time
as
you
think.

with the recent publication of Milner's newest book, i thought this great article by the late Todd Moore would help shed a little more light on Milner's work and enhance their appreciation of his art.
