  Favorite Poetic Films
« on: August 07, 2009, 12:32:07 PM » by Mikael Heller
If there are any more filmbuffs here, it would be interesting to see what you guys like. These are my poetic favorites:

The Mirror - Andrej Tarkovskij
Werckmeister Harmonies + Satan Tango - Bela Tarr
Fanny & Alexander (The longer episodic version is much much better than the shorter one) - Ingmar Bergman
Dekalog - Kieslowski
Nosferatu - Herzog
Dreams - Kurosawa

Oh I am certainly a film fan

Just to name a few...

(not in any order)

The Seventh Seal
Requiem for a Dream
The Wrestler
The Thin Red Line
A Clockwork Orange
2001: A Space Odyssey
American Psycho
The Pianist
Life Is Beautiful
Seven Years In Tibet
Pulp Fiction
The Wrestler
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now

Stanley Kubrick and Darren Aronofsky being my favorite directors

I could go on and on and on....

I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well, which could be classified as an epic poem of sorts

Kubrick is real good, Clockwork orange being my favorite followed closely by 2001. "life is beautiful", do you mean the italian ww2 film? I just saw that one again, haven't seen it since I was very young. That and the pianist are the best ww2 films I think, god knows there's been a few.

Great topic idea!

in no order:
Blade Runner (ok that one is in order)
Pulp Fiction
Mean Streets
The Bicycle Thief
2001
No Country for Old Men
Children of Men
8 1/2

Also the new film Moon that is just starting to get a wider release is ABSOLUTELY worth seeing. Especially for all you 2001 fans. It already has a firm place in my top 5 sci fi films of all time, and I loves me some sci fi.

When it comes to Kubrick...Poetically, my vote would go to Eyes Wide Shut or 2001. And anyone who hasn't seen his early war film, Paths of Glory, owes it to themselves to watch it immediately. Far more powerful than many modern war "epics", and far simpler.

Others:
3-Iron- Kim Ki-Duk
Cache- Michael Haneke
Le Moustache- Emmanuel Carrere
Alien (go and read the script online- it's literally poetry)- Ridley Scott
The Wicker Man (1973)- Robin Hardy
Woman of Water- Hidenori Sugimori
Pi/Requiem for a Dream- Aronofsky
Away from Her- Sarah Polley
etc. etc....

the english patient (screenplay by michael ondaatje and anthony minghella) has to be in the list. the novel is prose poetry and the film captures that as it was intended.

Oh dear I put The Wrestler twice. I must have been drunk...

I'd like to revive this and see if there's anymore film buffs out there.

I'm going to go with Lavonne and add The Road on there. What a film.
